Short film

Waking is an homage to the British-Mexican writer and artist, Leonora Carrington. The seemingly cosy atmosphere is punctured by a strange and unsettling narrative; traditional bedtime story meets Jan Svankmajer by way of macabre surrealism.
This original story is a creative response – and a gleeful celebration – of Carrington’s fiction, blending dark humour, the uncanny and general mischievousness.
I was asked to create a series of animated sequences which appear throughout the film.
“the only things
living here are memories”
“the trouble with
the Living Past
is it can take on
a life of its own"
the Living Past
is it can take on
a life of its own"
"If you are to gallop unfettered through life
you must be brave - and a bit brutal."
you must be brave - and a bit brutal."
Waking premiered at the Edward James Museum in Xilitla, Mexico in September 2024, as part of an exhibition celebrating the
life and work of Leonora Carrington.
Following the premiere, the film received a screening in London and is currently under consideration for national and international film festivals.
